. What is now Zion United Church of Christ was first established in 1886. It began as Immanuel Evangelische (Susott's) church in Susott's school house in 1854 and was about 1.5 miles south of town. Due to difficult travel conditions in the winter, church members felt they needed to build a church in town. Ground was broken in the spring of 1886 and completed in October 1886. The large anchor cross was placed on the steeple by a Mr. Schultz when the church was first built. Church services were entirely in German until January 1917. The church has been remodeled 3 times. In 1887, land was purchased for a cemetery east of town. Each Sunday before Memorial Day, our church service is held outside at the cemetery in conjunction with the American Legion Honor Guard. Other special church services are held throughout the year. We have Lenten services on the Wednesday nights leading up to Easter. Maundy Thursday the men of our church put on a candlelight Last Supper pageant. We alternate with New Jerusalem church each year for Good Friday services. Sunrise Service Easter morning has a breakfast after service. Christmas Eve starts with a pageant service early in the evening and a midnight candlelight service. We have this hope as an anchor for our lives. Hebrews 6:19 |
